FENZ

“Revitalizing Istinye's Architectural Stock”

Istanbul-based architectural practice GEOMIM has transformed a three-story building along the Bosphorus strait in Istinye. The FENZ project reimagines the structure into a multi-functional venue that includes a fine dining restaurant, office space, an accommodation unit, and a rooftop bar with panoramic views. The design integrates contemporary style with sustainable materials, inspired by Istanbul’s seashore architectural heritage.

Location: Istinye, Istanbul Turkey
Construction Area: Ap.550 Sqm
Completion Date: May 2023
Program: Mixed-Use

Istinye, known as "Little Golden Horn," has a rich history and a natural harbor. Originally a shipyard, the marina now hosts cafes, restaurants, and recreational spaces. The 1960s building had suffered from unsympathetic modifications, prompting GEOMIM’s renovation to respect its historical context while introducing modern elements.

GEOMIM’s design emphasizes verticality and rational compositions of facade elements, creating a dynamic, expressive aesthetic. The ground floor features a bar restaurant, the first floor houses a fine dining establishment, the second floor includes office space and an accommodation unit, and the rooftop bar offers stunning Bosphorus views. Each level is uniquely designed yet united by a consistent color palette by GEO_ID.

The building's upper floors have setbacks transformed into semi-open terraces with retractable awnings, providing sheltered areas for visitors. The use of copper ensures durability and gives the building a refined, warm character.

The transformation not only revitalizes the building but helps blend Istanbul’s cultural heritage with contemporary design. The thoughtful adaptive reuse offers a renewed architectural gem along Istinye’s seashore.
